An enchanting, lough-side family cottage with tennis court on a private island with far-reaching views and wonderful birdlife.
On the western shore of gorgeous Strangford Lough, privately owned Mahee is the last in a chain of islands linked by road causeways to the mainland and is home to heavenly Turtle Cottage. To arrive on Mahee and stay in this unique family house is to get away from reality, experience the splendid glory of nature all around you and to bask in the joy of this wonderful space. The house lends itself to 2 families holidaying together and comprises 2 wings each with 2 interconnecting bedrooms that sleep 5 people or is equally perfect for house parties or multi-generational families. The original kitchen has a modern gas/ electric range, fridge, freezer and dish washer and leads into the main living room with its wood burning stove and large bay window dining area overlooking the lough. This is a private family cottage and not usually available to rent on a formal basis which is why a stay here is so special. If you are looking for a boutique hotel-style cottage, this is not for you. Heating is basic (oil fired central heating plus free standing electric radiators for extra winter warmth) and quirks and curiosities have been deliberately left unchanged. If you can bear to leave the cottage with its tennis court, sweeping lawns and lough swims (there is also a water-sport centre nearby to rent kayaks and sailing dinghies), the attractions of Northern Ireland including Castle Espie, Balloo, the Giant’s Causeway and the Titantic Quarter are all within easy reach …… did we mention that Game of Thrones was largely shot on location in Northern Ireland? To be introduced to the world of Mahee is a rare and wonderful thing and we are delighted to be able to offer our clients the chance to stay in Turtle Cottage.
Ground Floor: Fully equipped kitchen, open plan living space with dining for 10 people, further sitting room with sofa bed, 2 double bedrooms, 2 bedrooms with 3 single beds in each, bathroom and shower room/utility room.
From the Giant’s Causeway and Belfast with its Titanic museum to the Mourne mountains, marvellous castles and wonderfully picturesque villages, Northern Ireland awaits.
